Our new Indianhead Polled Hereford
Hall of Fame inductees for 2013!

The Indianhead Polled Hereford Hall of Fame started in 1989 with 4 inductees, John Hop, George Wittstock, Fred Larsen Sr. and ….. The early ones were the charter members of this organization. The Hall of Fame is a worthwhile program that gives recognition to those that have been dedicated to the Polled Hereford breed and IPHA.

Dean and Phyllis Albert - Wade, Nicole and Luca Albert

The 2013 inductees are Phyllis and Dean Albert. They started their Polled Hereford herd in 1976 by purchasing heifers from an IPHA sale. Throughout the years they have had a small herd on their Hy-Way-Vu Farms, have shown cattle at State Fair and until last year they were owners of hereford cattle.  As soon as they can find 4-6 feeder calves they will again have cattle on the farm again.

Dean and Phyllis were instrumental in starting the IPHA University of Wisconsin-River Falls Scholarship Fund and our Hall of Fame. They have hosted IPHA annual summer picnic/field days and were key members in organizing some of the NorthWest District Wisconsin State Polled Hereford tours.  They were instrumental in organizing and clerking our yearly sales, helping make them a success.  They hosted many Board of Directors meetings at their farm.  Dean was also instrumental in helping get the St. Croix Valley Beef Test Station started. Wade was a recipient of one of the Junior Heifer Loans.

On a return trip from Madison after a meeting of the Wis. Polled Hereford Assoc., with Rudy Erickson, a discussion took place with the Albert’s about starting a scholarship at the University of Wisconsin – River Falls from the Indianhead Polled Hereford Association.  The idea that we should start a Scholarship Fund was presented to the Indianhead board and it was accepted. There was an early raffle for a Purebred Heifer. Fund auctions have continued with Phyllis being a key supporter with 3M products. Many students have received a scholarship because this fund was started and continues to grow with the help of members of the Indianhead Association.

In 1971 they took over the farm that they are on now.  In the 1980’s they had quite a few Polled Herefords.  In 1979 they cut back on their beef cattle as they went into dairying. In 1992 they got rid of the milking herd and continued with the Herefords. Dean and Phyllis continue to farm and Dean continues his Building Inspection.  Phyllis retired from 3M as a Color Scientist in 2012.

Wade and Luca  Albert

They have one son, Wade, his wife Nicole and a Grandson, Luca, which Phyllis likes to take care of sometime each week.  Phyllis enjoys quilting, photography, fancy work, and scrapbooking, and is very active in the church and likes to travel. Dean enjoys woodworking, reading and has built a garden railroad in the back yard.  They are both members of the St. Croix Valley Collectors Club.

 Hy-Way-Vu Farms
Right now there are no Herefords on the farm to take care of, only a couple of horses, but we know they still love the Hereford cattle and enjoy coming to IPHA events.  Congratulations, Phyllis and Dean Albert on being inducted into the Indianhead Polled Hereford Association Hall of Fame.
